Parties implicated in the evidence and preliminary findings of the People’s Tribunal on Economic Crime were given three months to respond to the allegations laid against them. Notice was sent to the parties by the Tribunal secretariat on 1 March 2018, specifying the deadline of 31 May 2018. With the passing of this deadline, the secretariat has received only two responses.
The first is a letter from Belgian bank KBC Group (formerly Kredietbank) responding to allegations that it aided and abetted the apartheid regime through facilitating the illegal sale of arms. The second is a response from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to the secretariat’s request that investigations into the economic crimes identified at the first People’s Tribunal are taken further.
